I use ChatGPT every single day.
It is a great tool for marketers, but only if you know how to properly prompt it.
For those who are new to this (I'll be surprised if you are), prompt engineering is the art of communicating with a generative large language model.
As the saying goes in the ML world, "garbage in garbage out", which essentially means that the quality of output is determined by the quality of the input. If flawed, inaccurate, or low-quality data (garbage) is fed into a system, the output will also be flawed, inaccurate, or of low quality (garbage out).
Similarly, if you give LLMs low-quality prompts, the output will be low-quality too.
Recently, a new paper was released, outlining 26 principled instructions to maximize ChatGPT outputs. It's titled "Principled Instructions Are All You Need for Questioning LLaMA-1/2, GPT-3.5/4" authored by Sondos Mahmoud Bsharat, Aidar Myrzakhan, Zhiqiang Shen with equal contributions from VILA LAB, Mohamed bin Zayed University of AI. You can access the full paper here.
With these principles in mind, let's start with ChatGPT.
5 of my favorite ChatGPT prompts
For writing email sequences
Prompt #1:
You're a copywriter and a content strategist who is an expert in writing copies that sell like David Ogilvy.
Write a five-series indoctrination email to introduce [your company name] -- [a brief sentence of what your company does], keeping in mind that the first email should focus on the top-of-the-funnel, and gradually move toward the bottom of the funnel.
Make the copy engaging, breaking down chunks of paragraphs into bite-sized sentences that are easy on the eyes.
The readers must be able to read smoothly and every line must be worth reading. Include a review or testimonial from someone, preferably in the third to last email of the series to get the buy-in from the audience.
Finally, add a postscript at the end of every email, stating that [your company name] is a [company structure] that incorporates [your promise].
Please include emojis where you see fit.
By having ChatGPT write emails with the inclusion of emojis, readers will feel more engaged and will read through the entire copy. Also, postscript is a main component in emails (usually people read that first), so ensure that is included.
For writing headlines/hooks
Hooks are the first few words your readers would read. If it doesn't capture their attention, they won't read the full copy.
Just like what David Ogilvy would say, "On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.”
Prompt #2:
You are skilled in copywriting, human psychology, marketing, writing, social media, digital marketing, and bringing as much attention as possible to your posts.
Some people might even say you mastered the art of "clickbait".
Your task is to create 3 hooks for 1 topic. A hook is the first line of a caption that hopefully makes people stop their scrolling on [social media of your choice].
Here are great hook examples that you must understand, master & get inspired from:
- You're chasing the wrong thing.
- Harsh truth about ghostwriting:
- High-performers are burning out.
- Your business success is one plan away.
- Business ideas are a dime a dozen.
- I don't care about squeezing every last drop of revenue out of my business.
- Right now is the greatest era of self-promotion in history.
- Your "obvious knowledge" could be someone else's breakthrough.
- Strongly held belief: You'll never work for a better company than the one you build.
Exclude any emojis in your hooks.Exclude any hashtags in your hooks. My topic = [add your topic here]
Now that you have mastered my topic, reply following this example:
Hook 1 =
Hook 2 =
Hook 3 =
Take a deep breath and work on this problem step-by-step.
This will help you write captivating hooks. Tweak it to your liking and your style.
For conducting competitor analysis
This prompt will certainly save you lots of time to conduct competitor analysis. The best way to go about this is to use this prompt in multiple LLMs like Bard, Perplexity, and even Microsoft Copilot.
Prompt #3:
Construct a comprehensive competitor analysis report for [your company's product/service]. Begin by identifying at least three main competitors in the [specific industry or market segment] and list down their website's URLs. For each competitor, you MUST include:
1. A brief overview of the competitor's history and market position.
2. Detailed descriptions of their core products/services, emphasizing unique selling points and pricing strategies.
3. Analysis of their marketing tacstics, including online presence, social media strategies, and advertising channels.
4. An examination of customer reviews and feedback to gauge brand reputation and customer satisfaction levels.
5. Assessment of their distribution channels and supply chain efficiency.
Conclude by synthesizing the data to highlight opportunities for our brand to differentiate itself and capture additional market share.
Your analysis should be factual, unbiased, and provide actionable insights, with each section clearly labeled and organized for ease of understanding.
Think of this as a strategic guide to help inform our marketing strategies and product development initiatives
This is one of the easiest ways to figure out what your competitors talk about, what they do, etc.

This will give you specific ideas of what to blog about and make sure that people will share your content around.
Prompt #4:

The body MUST contain at least three main sections, each with sub-points that are informative and easy to understand.
Conclude with a summary and a prompt for readers to engage with the content through comments or social media sharing.
Incorporate E-E-A-T principles to enhance the likelihood of increasing traffic to your articles.

My Thoughts
ChatGPT is an excellent tool for research.
The key is learning how to fine-tune your prompts to receive useful responses. Experiment with various prompts to discover what is effective for you and what isn't. Also, when using these tools for content creation, remember to edit the content yourself.

Top Learnings of the Week
Podcast: I listened to The Knowledge Project: ‘See People, Read People’ with Blake Eastman episode and there is one point that I remembered clearly – and it’s the importance of reading nonverbal cues, which he emphasized the significance of understanding and interpreting nonverbal signals in communication. While verbal communication is important, it’s nonverbal signals that tell the most.
